IT Systems Administrator/Manager, Las Campanas Observatory (LCO), Chile

The Carnegie Observatories, a department of the Carnegie Institution for Science and a non-profit, world-class astronomical institution with offices located in Pasadena, California, is seeking a professional to oversee, administer and maintain Information Technology (IT) facilities at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. The Observatories operate the telescopes on behalf of a consortium of universities, as well as a suite of telescopes, 2.5 meter and smaller. The Las Campanas Observatory is located 160 km north of La Serena, Chile. The site is one of the finest on the planet in terms of natural seeing, enabling the Magellan telescopes to regularly achieve 0.5 arcsec FWHM image quality or better.

This is a full-time position based in La Serena, Chile with working location distributed between the observatory offices in La Serena and on site activity at the observatory.  The IT Systems Administrator/Manager will directly report to the LCO Associate Director.

The candidate should have a degree in Computer Science/Engineering and several years experience with Systems Administration of Linux Servers. A proven track record of success with network administration, robust deployment of computational hardware across multiple operating systems and excellent programming skills are desired.

The position will provide primary system administration for the Linux file & network servers, mail servers, web servers and backup servers.  In addition, the IT Systems Administrator/Manager will support operations and administrative staff desktops and laptops running Linux, Mac OS and Windows; specify and purchase new network hardware and computer hardware and software as needed.  Occasional out-of-hours working may be required.  


•    Administer and Maintain IT facilities across the observatory
•    Develop and oversee internet and telecommunications networks both at the observatory and in the offices of El Pino in La Serena
•    Propose and maintain budget for IT expenses
•    Provide direct support to technical group personnel in operations for telescope and instrumentation computer systems and networking
•    Coordinate the observatory IT activities with the Systems Administrator responsible for IT at the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena 
•    Collaborate with and support the IT requirements of scientific staff and developers including the instrumentation groups at Carnegie as well as partner and consortium members
•    Document network and system behavior and provide regular reports.


•    Operating Systems: Linux administration at advanced level; Mac OSX advanced user deployment; Windows advanced user deployment and support
•    Networking: Layout, configurations and maintenance of switches, routers, firewalls, access points in distributed VLAN environment with external access via VPN; CISCO IOS familiarity desirable
•    Administration Services: Configuration of DNS, DHCP, Apache, ftp, etc; Configuration email services: postfix, spamassassin, dovecot; NFS, SAMBA; Configuration Cisco VPN.
•    Hardware: Server development and installation including Virtual machines; Configuration/Installation of network switches, routers, APs, etc… Basic level electronics.
